Nun sind wir da(h)!

Willkommen to Brisbane: Excursion to “German Station”

It is that time of year – Brisbane German Week has officially started!

We have teamed up with the Brisbane Greeters this year and invite you to join us as as we dig into Brisbane’s German history! We meet from 10am at Nunda Train Station what was once known as “German Station”. The Greeters have developed this “Brisbane’s German Story” Greeter Trail experience around Nundah, the place where Brisbane’s very first German families and settlers lived – Brisbane’s German Story begins here! You can register your attendance at the RSVP button below.

177 years ago the first free German settlers set foot on Queensland soil. These German immigrants were Queensland’s first free settlers . Discover the fascinating stories of Brisbane’s German roots while getting under the city’s skin and be truly immersed like a local.

Nundah has fast developed a reputation as a vibrant and eclectic suburb with up-to-the-minute fashion and café culture to suit all tastes. With a mix of contemporary and historical inspiration, Nundah is establishing itself as an attractive destination to live, work and visit.

Highlights:

  • the First Free Settlers Monument, German Australian Friendship Plaque and heritage trail that uncovers curious characters and little-known facts;
  • a stroll through the village of Nundah highlighting various points of interest, including a WWII bomb shelter and the War Memorial featuring a World War I German Krupp field gun;
  • a visit to the German Bakery where you may choose to indulge in a delicious German Brezel or Strudel;
  • a visit to St Paul’s Lutheran Church – learn about why there are two differing styles of pews;
  • discover spectacular station and street art around Nundah commemorating the Lutheran Missionaries and their relationship with the local Aborigines;
  • a walk around what was once “German Station”;
  • a reflective and fascinating revelation at the Nundah Cemetery that tells so much about some of Brisbane’s and Queensland’s earliest settlers.

The greet will start at 10am and will run up to four hours – excluding travel time to and from Nundah. The meeting point is Nundah Railway Station.
