Brisbane German Week

Bilingualism: Language and AI

“Language is another vision of life.”

Have you tried to understand a nation’s culture different from your own by speaking the country’s language? Have you ever tried seeing a piece of art through the artist’s eye or ear?

Student, parent or teacher? This day on language – parenting, teaching and learning – is a must see! Get excited for another great night of insights into the world of Bilingualism and AI’s role in language learning this German Week! We thrive to combine performance, exhibition and panel discussions exploring the progression of AI and its application in language learning and art, its relevance for other disciplines such as design and technology, and the influence of artists and language experts in your future career. This year we will have young students from Brisbane Girl’s Grammar debate live on stage, about why speaking a foreign language really matters and why German is a top pick! Working with a selection of experts from “Language is a Superpower”, Prof Greg Hainge FAHA and Prof Angie Knaggs from UQ’s School of Languages and Cultures, this will be an all-round immersive experience way beyond language learning that will inspire your senses.

Thanks to the team at Queensland AI Hub for hosting this event and to the Department of Education International for hosting the Education Leaders Forum as part of today!

2023 Review – Qld AI Hub (Image)

For last year’s Brisbane German Week Language & Arts event, we were joined by a panel of experts in creativity, language and technology. The discussion highlighted key takeaways from the latest research on what AI means for work, education and policy in Australia and elsewhere, and invite practising creatives to share their experience. The panel was accompanied by an exhibition of artworks illustrating sites that speak to Brisbane’s historical German connections.

Since the release of Chat GPT in November 2022, the power and potential of Artificial Intelligence has become more apparent than ever. In The Atlantic magazine’s “Breakthroughs of the Year” for 2022, Derek Thompson included ChatGPT as part of “the generative-AI eruption” that “may change our mind about how we work, how we think, and what human creativity is”. Meanwhile, with the emergence of consumer-grade AI image generation services, discussion and controversy have also renewed over the legality and ethics of AI-generated art, and the potential repercussions for artists.

Until 2024 – ‘tschüss’!
